The indigenous peoples of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, in the Caribbean of Colombia, have been opposing the mining that surrounds their territory for several years and their spiritual and traditional arguments have transcended to the judicial courts.(Paz Cardona, 2019)
The Kogui, Malay, Arhuaco, Kankuamo and Wiwa peoples have argued the cultural effects of mining but, according to Castañeda, this has always been distorted by the government as "lacking technical weight." Therefore, the indigenous people sought help to demonstrate, technically, not only the cultural and spiritual effects of this extractive activity, but also the negative consequences on an environmental scale in a biodiverse territory full of endemisms such as the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. For the Wiwa, and other indigenous people who live in this area, the environmental impact directly impacts their culture and customs. The biologist Diego Casallas-Pabón assures that it is very interesting to see how the cultural is intertwined with the environment and that during the study they gathered valuable information about the relationship that the community has with the flora and fauna, “each of the animals is a guardian of something ”and adds that“ as some species becomes extinct, the cultural information linked to it is also lost. And if that is lost there is also an impact on their economic activities and their perception of life and in general their worldview”. (Paz Cardona, 2019)
